The Style Contest is Live

The Style Contest for Movable Type, Typepad and LiveJournal

Attention Movable Type, Typepad and LJ designers, prepare your mice! After months of planning and coding, The Style Contest is live.

Arvind, Jesse, I and a whole crew from Six Apart have been hard at work to turn what started last year as a simple idea - "Let's have design contest!" - into a real contest, with real prizes, esteemed judges, and some pretty cool coding. (Thank goodness for Arvind who knows how to code, and for Jesse who lives and breathes style, or we'd still be at the "good idea" stage.)

Are you a web designer? This contest is for you. $17,000 worth of prizes. Your work showcased for the world to see.

Are you like me, not a web designer but often wishes she was? Tell your web designer friends about this contest. Think of it this way, the better the designs are that are available for our blogs, the better our blogs will look. (What Buddhists call "enlightened self-interest".) Spread the word.

Psst. Designers get ready.

A few of us decided a while back that Six Apart, and specifically Movable Type, needed a bit more in the way of default styles. Especially now that with MT3.2 the templates had changed. So we thought we would do something about that, and have been hard at work. Get ready. There will be prizes. Big prizes.

Coming Soon
(towards the end of March, 2006).

Share the Love - through Amazon.com

Many weblogs have book lists that are tied to an Amazon associate program wherein the blog author gets a small referral fee when you purchase a book from a click on their weblog. So this holiday season, give your favorite blogger a gift, with no cost to you, by clicking on book or CD link listed on your favorite blog to get to Amazon.com when you make your holiday purchases.

LMT is blessed to have several authors sharing their expertise on a volunteer basis on this site. If you have benefited from using one of their tutorials, please consider sharing the love this season by clicking on one of the following author names to enter Amazon.com. A small commission on any purchase you make through these links will go to the author.

Elise, Arvind, Chad Everett, Mike Everett-Lane, Chris Vannoy, Sarah Hughes

Welcome Guest Author Chris Vannoy

LMT welcomes Dummied.net's Chris Vannoy as a guest author. In his Bare Essentials Templates tutorial, Chris has gone to the effort to strip out any non-essential code from the new MT3.2 default templates to create a useful starting point for those who plan to customize their CSS. Thanks Chris, and welcome to LMT!

built_for_32.gif

Arvind of Movalog has just released a useful new tool for MT3.2 - the Movable Type Style Generator. Just click on any element - background color, banner, font - to change the element's properties. When you are all done, you can click on the Download button and voila, you have the stylesheet, all ready to work with the new MT 3.2 templates. Works with Typepad and LiveJournal too. For all of us who hate messing around with CSS, thanks Arvind!

MT-Protect Plugin

Arvind Satyatanarayan, author of Movalog and creator of MT-Blogroll, has released a new Movable Type plugin - MT-Protect - which allows you to protect individual weblog entries via password or via a Typekey identity. This plugin may prove especially useful for those wanting to charge for access, or to restrict access in some way, to specific parts of their blog.

Arvind has also initiated a Drop-Cash campaign to help support his efforts as a developer for this plugin. Even if you don't plan to use the Protect plugin, I encourage you to make a donation, now! Arvind has spent several hundreds of hours providing useful tips, hacks, and plugins for the Movable Type community. I believe that what he is asking for only represents a part of what it actually costs to run Movalog on a monthly basis. Be generous and help support the MT developer community!

By the way, if you already are an Amazon Associate, did you know that you don't get any credit when you make purchases from your own associates link? At the end of the quarter, Amazon deducts fees from purchases that you made using your own associates link. Yet another reason to share the love and use links from others' sites to get to Amazon.

Attacked!

Updated 12:30 am PST, Oct 4

Wednesday morning, September 29th, Learning Movable Type and some of the other MT weblogs hosted at elise.com were intruded by a spammer who placed popup generating code on the MT index and archive templates. Not being aware of the additional code on my templates, as I rebuilt the pages of my weblogs, the rebuilt pages included this code which generated an obnoxious spam popup window every time someone visited the page. I apologize to all who may have been inconvenienced by this, and thank those of you who brought it to my attention.

CocoaMySQL - MySQL Tool for Mac

Finally, a desktop app for managing your MySQL database designed for Mac OS X. CocoaMySQL is a GPL licensed (free) download. It is wonderfully easy to use, just what you would expect a Mac app to be. And because it's an application, not a web-based tool, it is blazingly fast.
